We’ve all come upon John Lennon. His writings and music has been an inspiration to the freethinking and liberal minded. During the times of the communist regime in the Czech Republic, students used to scribble anti-communist slogans on a wall in Prague. Soon after the death of Lennon, students scribbled the lyrics of the song Imagine etc. and his message of peace on this wall, much to the irritation of the regime. The wall became a significant symbol of their protest. The John Lennon Wall in Prague is a relic of the times that the Czech revolted the regime of Gustav Husak.
The Infant Jesus of Prague shrine is nearby. Pilgrims come from far and wide to petition and give thanks in front of the miraculous statue. Small Infant Jesus of Prague statues are seen in curio and souvenir shops everywhere. Pictures of the miraculous statue are seen in shops, restaurants and cybercafés etc.
The devotion of the People of Prague to Infant Jesus is also apparent from the graffiti on the John Lennon Wall. You will find the words ‘Jesus loves you’ scribbled at numerous places. I cannot think of a better example of pop culture meeting religion.
I’d spent between the 7th and the 10th of October in 2010 in Prague. I’d told you about the Clock Tower completing 600 years on the 9th. I later found out that it was also John Lennon’s birthday. I was at the wall on the morning of the 9th!
